Arbery jury on my mind today. Diary comics from May 2020. Another world is possible, but we know justice doesn't happen on its own. #comics #diarycomics #justiceforahmaud #compositionnotebook All trans people have stories about checkpoints—the TSA, the bouncer, the cop who pulls you over. This example here is on the slight end of the spectrum. I haven’t been on a plane in some years now, but if I can, I try to pick a lane with a queer-presenting person, because they can ease the way. What a relief it is to finally have an ID that match your name and gender, but that doesn’t take away the vulnerability and precarity of passing through TSA x-ray machines or the violence of being flagged, patted down, invasively searched. comp book collage, 2017. why make art? This was five years ago now, November 2016. The magic of encounters like this with strangers—unpredictable, delightful—is never lost on me. This person came into my life at a most vulnerable moment very early in transition. #trans #transgender #transcomics #queercomics #philly #lgbtart I started drawing comics with Lynda Barry in 2014. This four-panel daily diary from those early days--true story--captures the moment when I realized that in order to draw myself from the front, I effectively had to pop the figurative eyeball out of my own head and turn it around. Artists do this! They learn how to project themselves outward and move around a scene, to change the camera angle in their mind's eye. Beyond comics, a very useful practice in life. #trans #transition #transgender #transgenderawareness #transgenderawarenessweek #comics #comicsart #diarycomics . The excellent thing about making comics through transition has been to capture states of mind, states of body as they are and as they shift. I didn't get myself from the doctor; what I did get was a congruence between my outward appearance and my inner self. #trans #transcomics #transgender #transawareness This Trans Awareness Week, pass it on. #trans #transgender #transcomics #gsa #lgbtq

Hey hey everyone… I am taking a social media hiatus for a while—feels important. I’ll be making comics, working on a new book. You’ll see me with @goodvibes.only__ on the @realtalkscsu podcast (season 3 premieres this week!) and as a sometime photography assistant to @catebarryphotography . Thank you all for the birthday wishes that made for a joyful transition to 40! Let’s talk on the phone or hang out otherwise.
Found outside the elementary school down the street this afternoon. It’s been a tough week back in the classroom in person (understatement; also not all bad; more perhaps another time). But this. This this this.
Saturday vibes 🎨 🎶 🪶
Before and after. First day back on campus. @trishkins says this teaching lewk has cruise ship activities director vibes. She’s not wrong. This way for the tour 🚀🛸👽
Shout out to my favorite artist, my niece Zoë. If we lived in the same place and it weren’t a pandemic, I would have her co-teach my Family Stories class. This is what we are all trying to get back to! She’s a master.
Sweet Memphis demonstrating how I’m feeling after the brilliant 2021 Graphic Medicine Unconvention. Thanks to all the organizers and participants—thank you, thank you. #dogsofgraphicmedicine
